Rochester Choral Society invites you to enjoy our virtual performance of the Mozart Requiem - available here and on YouTube from Saturday 4th July 2020.
We had intended to perform this deeply emotional and inspiring work as part of our Summer Concert in Rochester Cathedral, but this was cancelled as a result of the coronavirus outbreak. However, although it has sadly prevented us meeting to rehearse and perform as a choir, coronavirus has not stopped our members from wanting to make music which might help raise people’s spirits through these difficult times. While looking forward to happier days when we can sing together again, we have made this performance by recording our individual voices in our own homes, and also included in our virtual choir some past and possible future members of the Society.
This online event is free. However, if you would like to make a donation we support Help Musicians UK and the Charities Aid Foundation. If you would like to support the Rochester Choral Society then please feel free to make a donation.

Rochester Choral Society presents Sing and Discover Day: Mozart myths and misconceptions with John Hancorn and Richard Wigmore
It is a quirk of musical history that Mozart's two greatest choral works, the C Minor Mass and the Requiem, remained unfinished. Mystery and speculation still surround these works, composed at either end of Mozart's decade in Vienna. In our study day, conductor John Hancorn and writer-musicologist Richard Wigmore will explore the biographical background of these masterpieces and attempt to untangle known facts from Romantic myth. Through recordings, we shall compare assorted attempts to complete the Mass and Requiem. Amid the discovery, John will rehearse the choir in choruses that range from the sombre opening of the Requiem to the resplendent 'Cum sancto spiritu' of the Mass, the most monumental chorus that Mozart ever wrote.

Please see an article written by Peter Bassano about the War Requiem, in which he reflects not just on this up-coming performance but on the huge public response to this piece when first performed in the wake of both World Wars, the impact of WW1 on his own family and the influence of the War Requiem and its composer, Benjamin Britten, on his own development as a musician and conductor.
